Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review

Yesmile Teeth Whitening Kit Review - Header Image

Lifestyle habits can cause stains to build up up on the outside of the teeth and make them look darker than they once were.

This product may make your teeth appear whiter, by removing surface stains.

It will not change the natural colour of your teeth in the same way that professional whitening / bleaching can.

Our guide to the best teeth whitening options gives you all the information you need to know, to make an informed decision about teeth whitening or to see our full range of whitening content, visit our teeth whitening hub page.

Pros

  • It can potentially improve the colour of your teeth by removing stains
  • UV light enhances whitening effects
  • Contains hydrogen peroxide
  • Simple to use

Cons

  • Everyone will get different results
  • Low percentage of hydrogen peroxide
  • Only a weeks worth of gel
  • Easy to get gel on the gums

Does it actually work?

We understand you want whiter teeth, but this might not be the right product for you.

Tooth whitening is a complex process and every person’s circumstances and results are different (although the adverts and claims from many manufacturers don't make this clear).

This product may work to remove surface stains from your teeth, but it will not change the natural colour of your teeth in the same way that professional whitening / bleaching will.

Teeth whitening - a quick explainer

There is a general misunderstanding of how whitening products work, which is why we've covered the topic in detail.

Some products, such as the one being reviewed here, remove stains. This is not the same as professional bleaching carried out by a dentist, and this is where much of the confusion stems from.

Before choosing a product or procedure, it’s important to understand the basics. This small investment of time will save you money and improve your oral health.

Whether opting for a stain removal product or professional bleaching, there are cost-effective options available, which we cover throughout our content.

We encourage you to learn more about teeth whitening, and the following articles (created by our in-house dentist)  are a great place to start:

If you're interested in whitening, our overall advice is to visit the dentist before using a whitening product, but you can find a more detailed explanation of this by reading the links shared above.

We've also created this short video, which further explains how stain removal products may not work the way you think:

Before & after results

Everyone’s teeth are different.

Our lifestyles, genetics and medical conditions all have an influence on our teeth.
Some people have heavily stained teeth, whilst others do not.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light works by removing surface stains and may make your teeth appear whiter, but it will not change the natural colour of your teeth.

The results you achieve by using Yesmile will be different to me.

I have tried many different products and have little to no staining on my teeth.

Because of these circumstances, it would therefore be inaccurate to show before and after images to suggest what results you might get, because simply put, your before and after results may be very different.

However, to give you an idea, visit our teeth whitening before and after page, and you can see the kind of results you can expect from a stain removal product such as this, and the results you can expect from professional bleaching.

Cost

£16.45 is the cost of this UV whitening kit from Yesmile.

For this price you get 1 x teeth whitening pen and 1 x USB powered UV light and 1 x USB cable adapter.

The cost for additional whitening pens is £11.35.

The pen and UV light can be purchased separately if required.

Where To Buy

Although Yesmile have their own website (www.yesmile.co.uk) at the time of writing it is only their teeth whitening strips, not this UV kit that is available to purchase through their own site.

The UV light and teeth whitening pen are available for purchase online at Amazon UK. However, this is a product we advise against buying. The reasons for this will become clear if you read the rest of the review.

Taste, Packaging etc

Yesmile sell their teeth whitening products separately or as a kit, here I have both the UV light and their teeth whitening pen.

They come supplied in a cardboard box and inside is:

  • 1 x Yesmile teeth whitening pen coconut formula
  • 1 x UV LED light
  • 1 x USB cable adapter

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 1

There are no trays to fit to the teeth, that is because you brush the whitening gel, found inside the pen, onto your teeth, rather than placing it in a tray which it most common approach.

The whitening pen contains 5ml of the gel.

The ingredients of the gel are listed in the ingredients section found below, but I will explain how these work in a moment.

Clear in colour the whitening gel is, it is inside a clear plastic syringe like tube. Shake it for 7 seconds, then pull off the cap to reveal a brush with a number of bristles on the end.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 2

At the other end is what is essentially the plunger to push the gel inside the tube out. However, where most you would push, here you twist the top of the tube. It is on a ratchet type system, the more you twist the more it pushes on the gel to push it out through the bristles.

I actually like this method as although slightly awkward, it stops too much gel being pushed out and allows you to get a thin coating on the bristles of the brush.

They call this a pen, but the bristles are essentially what would be your pen nib. You then gently paint the gel onto the teeth.

The bristles are fairly soft but clustered together in a fairly tight formation to make it relatively easy to apply the tel to the teeth.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 3

The gel is tacky and sticks to the teeth fairly well.

Be careful not to get it onto the gums.

Applying it in front of a mirror would be best.

You complete this for all of your teeth.

According to Yesmile, the 5ml should last about a week.

Once complete place the cap back on the pen and then you need to get a hold of the UV light that comes supplied.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 4

Essentially 11 UV lights are wired up inside the rubber/silicone mouthpiece that you bite onto. A cable extends out of the mouth.

This cable is about 45cm/30” in length.

At the end of the cable is a microUSB connector.

The idea is you plug this into a microUSB port to get power to activate the LED’s.

A connection to your smartphone is the suggested idea.

All well and good if your phone has a microUSB connection.

If not, also provided is a cable adapter, into which the microUSB cable can connect. From the adapter are 3 different connections, microUSB again, lightning (Apple) and a full sized USB connector.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 5

The length of this adapter and cables is about 13cm/6 inches.

With the use of the adaptor this should give enough options for most people to get power to the LEDs.

The directions encourage a smartphone, purely because you can occupy yourself on the phone whilst the whitening process takes place.

Once powered up, you place it in the mouth and bite down on it for 20-25 minutes.

The UV light works in a couple of ways.

Heat from the LED’s can enhance the whitening effect by dehydrating the teeth. When teeth dry out they take on a whiter appearance.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 6

The light also essentially activates the ingredients in the gel and causes light to reflect off the teeth in a way that makes them appear whiter.

UV light can be damaging to the eyes, so you need to be careful when using this.

UV light is too what dental professionals use to help with the whitening process when completed in a dental surgery. The difference here is that their UV light is significantly more powerful (LEDs don’t produce much heat) and protective eyewear is provided when you are using this.

Once the 20 minutes or so have passed, you disconnect the power and rinse the mouthpiece off.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 7

There are no suggestions to brush the teeth after use, but you might want to, in order to rid the teeth of any residue gel left behind.

No dedicated user guide or safety instructions are provided. There are just limited directions, complete with graphics of how to use on the box.

It is worth touching on the ingredients and how they work.

It is not clear what the percentages of ingredients are, but the majority of the gel is likely made up of glycerin and water.

However, unlike the majority of whitening pens/gels you can buy from online and high street stores, this actually contains hydrogen peroxide. This is the same bleaching agent a dentist would use to actually change the natural colour of the teeth.

Therefore technically, this gel could change the natural colour of the tooth and achieve more than just stain removal. However, although the percentage of peroxide is not mentioned, I must presume it is the legal limit of 0.1%.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 8

Therefore at 60 times weaker than dentist provided whitening gel (6%), the bleaching/whitening effects are significantly limited and for the most part it remains as a stain removal product than a bleaching product.

The glycerin can dehydrate teeth, which in turn makes the teeth whiter and the included carbomer is essentially an acid that will work to break down the staining on the external surface of the teeth.

On the packaging of the product itself there are no ridiculous claims of what it can achieve.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 9

The Amazon sales page does suggest fast results within just 20 minutes and that it is clinically proven. Some may see results within 20 minutes, the vast majority will take a few days, weeks or maybe never at all.

Someone with stain free teeth for example will likely see no difference, no matter how long they use it.

I highly doubt this particular product has been clinically proven. It is not totally clear, but I imagine this refers to the use of UV light as an accelerator in whitening teeth. When this clinical study was conducted it is more than likely that the UV light used was more powerful.

The company suggest on the sales page they have a 100% money back guarantee. It is not clear what conditions are attached to this, if any. I would like to think they stick by it. In theory then if you see no improvements, you can return it.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 10

That said, rather than trying and hoping for improvement, I imagine you really want something that will work from the start.

If stains on the teeth are the cause of your dull or discoloured teeth (your dentist will be able to tell you) a more effective option would be a scale and polish by a dental hygienist.

Or, potentially as effective as Yesmile is a good toothbrush, toothpaste and brushing routine can remove the extrinsic staining.

Ingredients

The ingredients of the gel found in the whitening pen are:

Pharmaceutical hydrogen peroxide, carbomer, nano SiO2m WDI-38, glycerin, mentho, coconut oil, deionized water and xylitol.

Safety

Assuming what is stated on the package is correct, this product does not pose a significant risk to your health if the correct precautions are taken.

However it is a little disappointing that there is not more information about how to use the product correctly and safely.

There are a few directions on the outer box and on the box of the whitening pen, but there is no user/safety manual included. The directions are certainly not comprehensive.

UV light can be damaging to the eyes and the gel can cause for some sensitivity to the teeth and particularly the gums if they are exposed to it.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 11

The way the gel from within the pen has to be applied to the teeth offers opportunity for the user to apply the gel to the gum, even if mistakenly. There are no directions on wiping it off etc.

It contains hydrogen peroxide, this is the same agent that dentists use to whiten the teeth. I presume the gel contains just 0.1% hydrogen peroxide as this is the legal limit for such products in the UK, but it is not labelled on the packaging.

It is also unclear on the shelf life of this product. There is no use by date on it. Whilst once you begin using it, you will likely do so quickly, if it were sitting on your shelf for 6 months before you use it, is it still safe to use? I presume so.

Whilst there is an address on the box to say who it is manufactured and distributed by, there are no contact details such as a telephone number or email address provided for you to use. The website has a contact from only, but no additional contact information.

FAQ’s on the website are limited and only apply to their whitening strips.

These shortcomings and omissions make it hard to completely trust the legitimacy of this product.

Is Yesmile eco-friendly?

The Yesmile kit does not claim to be eco-friendly, but you would probably agree that where possible you want to limit the amount of product that you dispose of for the sake of the environment.

It comes supplied in a cardboard box, which can be recycled.

As far as I am aware, the plastic whitening pen cannot be recycled and the UV light would need to be correctly disposed of if required because it contains electrical components.

Whilst this kit may allow you to achieve the whitening results you want, the reality is that the UV light is significantly less powerful than that used by dentists.

Although the gel does contain hydrogen peroxide, the concentration is so low that the results can take a considerable amount of time to achieve. As a result, the kit may go to waste as you won’t achieve the results desired as quickly as you would like.

Other whitening products from Yesmile

Aside from this teeth whitening UV light, the company does offer replacement whitening pens that contain the gel to help remove stains, that make the teeth appear whiter.

There are too whitening strips on offer which achieve similar results to the kit being reviewed here, removing stains rather than really whitening the teeth by changing the natural tooth colour.

What we would like to see improved

What we would like to see Yesmile improve on is the same thing that most companies selling so called whitening products should also improve on, and that is patient education.

There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding around tooth whitening.

Yesmile Teeth Whitening UV Light Review 13

A large number of products are really only stain removal products, but the public tend not to be aware of this and don’t generally know whether they have staining on their teeth or not.

It would be good to see more steps taken to help customers understand what are actually realistic results from using such products.

Yesmile suggest fast results, in as little as 20 minutes, but quite simply this does not apply to all.

In particular with Yesmile, more information about the product use, safety and ways to contact the company in case of any issues would be good to see.

Ratings / Conclusion

As we’ve mentioned in the results section, it’s difficult for us (or anybody else) to systematically test numerous whitening products.

For this reason, we have chosen to omit star ratings.

However, below you can find a summary of our closing thoughts.

Of the many so called teeth whitening products that exist this potentially is one of the more effective, because it actually contains hydrogen peroxide, a key ingredient that can change the natural tooth colour. Therefore changing the internal structure of the tooth and actually whitening them tooth rather than just removing the external staining on the tooth surface.

However, whilst it is not totally clear, assuming this is a legally compliant product, it contains just 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide. This is 60% less powerful than the gel provided by a dentist.

As a result the speed of the colour change will be extremely slow and essentially very difficult to notice.

The UV light may give enhancing effects, but when you consider the cost of this product and buying replacement whitening pens, your money would be better spent on professional teeth whitening available from a registered dental professional.

There may well be a higher upfront cost, but the results will be noticeable, safer and I would suggest is more convenient than sitting with a UV light in your mouth every day.

FAQ

  • Does it contain peroxides?
    • Yes. It contains hydrogen peroxide. It is believed the concentration is o.1%.

    • Bianca,

The idea is you use it for about a week. You apply the gel to the teeth once a day, shine the light for 20-25 minutes and then repeat this until the gel has been used up or the desired level of ‘whitening’ has en achieved.
