At only £1 this is a bargain worth having
The name ‘Dental Care Kit’ sounds wonderful and if we asked you to put a price on it what would you say? £5, £10, £15 even.
Price is reflective of what you get so you may first ask what you get included?
With the PristineGleam kit you get 13 pieces of equipment:
- Tongue brush
- Stain eraser
- 8 x toothpicks
All of this can cost as little as a singe £1 if you’re buying from somewhere like Poundland on the high street. If you want to buy online, Amazon offers it at £2.49 with free delivery, just99.co.uk offers it at £3.94 including delivery, and we’ve seen it for less than £2 on ebay UK.
Prices do vary; we have seen this for up to £5 but spend more than £3 and you are being ripped off a little.
For £1 or slightly more, this is well worth the money. Read our full review below, or watch this quick video review.
Most certainly at the budget end of the scale the quality of these items are questionable but they serve a purpose.
Despite having an electric toothbrush costing several hundred pounds and even premium toothpastes, this arsenal of equipment that cost just £1 has a place.
The manual toothbrush and tongue brush are useful in an overnight bag or in an emergency if the power on your electric toothbrush has depleted.
8 included toothpicks are what they are. Designed for one time use the wooden picks serve the purpose well, there’s not a great deal we can say for the good or bad here.
For us, the items that make this kit worthwhile are the mirror and the pick.
Dentists always use mirrors, but when was the last time you properly checked the back of your upper teeth? The mirror is considerably helpful with this. You either need to be stood in front of a mirror yourself or have someone check for you, but the included mirror allows you to do a quick observation and check should you have any oral issues such as blisters, disease or bleeding.
The handle of the mirror is cheap plastic which is not particularly nice to hold and the mirror itself is of low quality. It mists easily in the mouth and could in my opinion be fractionally bigger. However it is great. I love to use this if only its once every couple of weeks to just check nothing funny is going on, it gives that peace of mind.
It will take a few goes to get used to positioning the mirror in the mouth and using the reflection of the mirror in front of you to view the reflection on the mirror in your mouth.
The included pick is of equally poor quality but is functional. Different shaped picks at each end allow it to fit to different parts of the mouth and along teeth. The metal is not ideal to scrape up against teeth but you can do so and it is a little sharper which is good for perhaps working the gum line a bit more if your gams are a bit stronger. The size does mean the pick gets into most gaps.
Lastly, the included eraser is an interesting idea. It does remove some marks but how effective it really is we are not so sure. In our testing we did not really use it, but for the purpose of testing we did drink a few cups of tea and left our teeth unclean for a day to see if it removed the staining that built up. It did but the result is a sand like texture of erasings in the mouth. A good brush and paste cleans away the residue left by drinks like tea and coffee. Someone with badly stained teeth will likely see more success from this technique than the average person.
£1 gets you so little today that this is worth having for a just-in-case scenario. You could even have a few packs and use one for each weekend you go away or each overnight stay, think of it as a throwaway solution. Maybe keep some for guests you have stay, in case they forget theirs.
We found value in the pick and mirror – despite the quality they serve a purpose and for the price can be forgiven. You may not use parts all that often, or you may use it more regularly if you have a problem and get great value from it.
Do not go out of your way to buy one, but if you are next in a £1 store or store stocking these, it might be worth it for you. If you’re buying online, it wouldn’t warrant the posting charge on its own, but is a perfect add-on to an order if you are buying other items. As we mentioned earlier, Amazon or ebay will be your cheapest online options.
