Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 vs Pro 2 2900 1

Editor's note

The Pro 2 2500 was previously our top choice. However, the 2500 has now been discontinued and the Pro 3 3500 is the recommended alternative.

Which one would we choose?

Our choice: Oral-B Pro 2 2500 / Amazon, eBay / ~£52.99

2nd choice: Oral-B Pro 2 2000 / Amazon, eBay / ~£79.99

It is the Pro 2 2500 that ultimately gets the winning vote from me, because you get the benefit of a travel case in the box.

With the inclusion of the travel case and price being the only significant difference between the two models, either are good buys, it is more about what is right for you and what the price is at the time of purchase.

More often than not, it is the more premium Pro 2 2500 that is cheaper than the Pro 2 2000.

  • The Pro 2 2500 comes with a travel case in the box whereas the Pro 2 2000 does not.
  • The Pro 2 2500 comes with Black/White and Pink/White colour options compared to the Pink/White, Blue/White and White/White of the Pro 2 2000.
  • Brush heads provided (subject to model).
  • The Pro 2 2500 is technically the expensive option, but most of the time it is cheaper or there is little in the way of real price difference.

Please note.

High street and online retailer Boots, have a different variant of the Pro 2 2500.  Instead of a travel case, a tube of Oral-B’s Pro-Expert toothpaste is included and the brush handle grip colour is Blue. I consider the travel case more desirable than the tube of toothpaste.

There is another model called Pro 2 2900 which many have asked about how it compares to the Pro 2 2000 & 2500. CLICK HERE to see our summary and verdict.

Please note. Every effort is made to ensure the key differences listed are correct, but these differences are subject to change without notice. Products and the box contents can be changed without notice and different variants can exist.

Detailed comparison: what’s the difference between the Oral-B Pro 2 2000 and Pro 2 2500?

OK, so let’s be clear from the start here the differences between these two models are minimal.

It is very easy to get confused with the array of different options available from Oral-B, so you need to pay attention to ensure you are getting the right brush for you.

Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 2

Technically, the Pro 2 2500 sits above the Pro 2 2000 in the range as it offers more in the box.

With the 2 2500 you get a travel case included.

Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 3

A fairly basic but functional affair, the case is made from a clear plastic.  Hinged on the left side 2 halves of the case come together to lock tight and provide a relatively strong travel case, despite the relatively limited thickness to the plastic.

Curved from most angles the case holds the brush handle and up to 2 brush heads.

Functional for the backpacker to the businessperson, it does not have the level of quality and premium construction some might desire but it does the job of avoiding accidental activation and keeping the brush out of contact with other items in your bag.

Aside from the travel case, the other key difference is the handle colour.

The physical size and features of the brushes are identical, but the colours are different.

Made from a gloss white plastic, the Pro 2 2000 comes with either a blue, pink or white rubber grip that runs down the front of the handle, contrasting against the white plastic; whilst the Pro 2 2500 comes with either black or pink rubber down the handle.

Hopefully,y this all makes sense so far.

Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 4

Another slight difference is the brush head that comes provided.  Both models will come supplied with 1 brush head as standard.

However, there are different package options where the brush head provided differs.

You have:

  • Pro 2 2000N -- Comes supplied with a CrossAction brush head
  • Pro 2 2000W -- Comes supplied with a 3D White brush head
  • Pro 2 2000S -- Comes supplied with a Sensitive brush head

The same principle applies to the Pro 2 2500.  The letter at the end of the model number depicts the brush head it comes provided with.

Therefore a retailer may sell the Pro 2 2000N and the Pro 2 2500N both of which come with the CrossAction brush head.

The differences between the brush heads are explained in our ultimate Oral-B brush head guide, if you would like to know more.

I should point out lastly, that often (but always subject to change) the Pro 2 2000W or Pro 2 2500W will be the pink/white handle whilst the Pro 2 2000N/S will be the blue/white and the Pro 2 2500N/S will be the black/white handle.

Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 5

As a result of the case being included, it is generally the Pro 2 2500 that is marginally more expensive than the Pro 2 2000.

The Pro 2 2500 has a recommended retail price of £79.99 but is generally available from £30-£40, compared to the RRP of £69.99 for the Pro 2 2000 which is normally available for £30-35.

Either are good brushes and it’s personal opinion which is right or best for you.

You can purchase different brush heads and even the case separately if you require, so you are not limited should you decide in the future you want a slightly different configuration.

With the key differences covered I want to reiterate how the brushes are so very similar.

Both have 2 cleaning modes, Daily Clean and Sensitive.

A timer, quadpacer and pressure sensor are built into both handles.

Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 6

2 weeks battery life is possible from the built in lithium-ion battery.

The handle is water resistant and comes with a 2 year warranty, that can be extended to 3 years with either model by simply registering the brush online with Oral-B.

In the box, both come with a basic but functional charging stand that connects to the 2 pin socket found in most bathrooms.

Does one clean better than the other?

No there is no difference.  Technically they are the same from the perspective of cleaning abilities so to claim one cleans better than the other is unjustified.

With the right technique and regular cleaning, you will leave your teeth feeling and looking healthier, but if you are using the Pro 2 2000 or 2 2500 on the daily clean or sensitive mode, there is no known difference in their actual results.

Is one better priced than the other?

Normally, the Pro 2 2500 is a few pounds more expensive because of the included travel case.

You can purchase the travel case separately, this would normally be anywhere between £10-15.

Oral-B Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2500 7

Thus if you think you would like or benefit from a travel case it might be worth paying a few pounds more over and above the Pro 2 2000 to benefit from the case.

However, for extended periods of time the more premium 2500 has been sold for a few pounds less than the Pro 2 2000, so it, in essence, makes sense to buy it.

Fewer retail stores stock the Pro 2 2500 than the 2000, so it is the 2000 that is more easily accessible, but many online retailers stock both.

The price will depend on when and where you buy it and more often than not there will be pennies difference in the price.

Please note that all prices quoted are approximates and will vary based on location, supplier and time of purchase.  These figures were correct at the time of writing and should not be relied upon as hard fact, but used as a guide during your decision process.

Conclusion

I generally recommend the Pro 2 2500 as the one to go for as for most this is the better buy.

As I have pointed out though with so little between them and the Pro 2 2000 sometimes, much will depend on your preference, time and location of purchase.

This is far from a guarantee, but generally, if you buy from Amazon I believe that the difference in price will be such that the 2500 will always be the better buy.

For the frequent traveller, the included case can be a real benefit.  Ultimately, choose the brush you are most happy with and pay a price you are content with.

Oral-B Pro 2 2900 vs Pro 2 2000/2500

As the article above has highlighted, the fundamental difference between the Pro 2 2000 and the Pro 2 2500 is the inclusion of the travel case with the 2500.

However, to complicate things further there is also a Pro 2 2900 within the Oral-B range.  You may have come across it or been offered it as an option for you.  No doubt you are wondering how it compares.  Let me explain.

Oral-B Pro 2 2900

Which one would we choose?

Our choice: Oral-B Pro 2 2500 / Amazon, eBay / ~£52.99

If the decision was on price alone, then the Pro 2 2900 would be our overall choice, because although it is more expensive to buy, when you factor in that for the higher price you get 2 brush handles, it actually works out better value per handle.

However, it is not necessarily as black and white as this and depends on your personal circumstances to some extent.

For me and many, the Pro 2 2500 is actually the better buy, just.

This is because unless you need 2 brush handle, there is little point buying the 2900.

You might think you can give the other handle to a friend or relative, you certainly could.  However, they would then need to buy a charging stand for it, if they did not have one.

Even if you do need 2 brush handles, the 2500 can be a more attractive option, because if you buy 2 of the 2500 models you will get 2 charging stands and 2 travel cases compared to only a single charging stand with the 2900.

Lets assume you are a couple living together and you buy the 2900.  It would be cheaper to buy outright, but if you went on holiday, neither of you have a travel case to store the toothbrush handle and head in.

If you needed to charge the toothbrush, you have to share a charging stand, whereas the Pro 2500 comes with 1 with each handle and that useful travel case.

The typical price for the 2900 appears to be around £45, compared to the £30 for the 2500.  That would make 2 of the 2500 £60, £15 more expensive than the 2900.  However, it would cost you more than this to buy 2 travel cases alone, let alone the extra charging stand, if you needed it.

To conclude, both brushes are technically the same.  The cleaning performance is identical, its what you get in the box and the value that each offers you.  You need to decide what is important.

Key differences

Pro 2 2000 vs Pro 2 2900

  • The Pro 2 2900 has 2 brush handles in the box that are Pink/White and Black/White in colour whereas the Pro 2 2000 comes with just 1 brush handle in the box with a Pink/White or Blue/White coloured brush handle.
  • Brush heads provided (subject to model).
  • The Pro 2 2900 comes with 1 charging stand to shared between the 2 brush handles.
  • The Pro 2 2900 is technically the expensive option as it includes 2 brush handles, but when you price it per handle included it is often cheapest.

Hi Jon! That was most helpful. I was wondering whether the cleaning modes of the 2900 is the same as 2000 (daily clean and sensitive) as certain website description and box image says the 2900’s modes are daily clean and gum care. Would you happen to know the info to this?

May. I am under the understanding they are the same. Daily Clean and Sensitive. I too have seen some references to Daily Clean and Gum Care. If memory serves me correctly, there was some confusion when the models first launched, as previous iterations of these models did have gum care & Oral-B are not always very explicit about the modes. It will just say 2 modes rather than what they are.

This is a superbly helpful article, cutting straight through the morass of often bewilderingly slight variations in serial numbers and contents. It's great to know that, simply, anything with the 'Pro 2' prefix is the same handle doing the same job – the four digits[+letter] after it is merely a designator as to what bits and pieces (different brush heads, a case, a second handle) come in the box. Many thanks indeed!

Hello, As the 2900 comes with 2 handles, could you tell me if the charger is a standard oral b one please? Could I use my current oral b charger for the second one? Thank you

Hi Pam. Yes, you could. With the exception of the Oral-B iO, all the current Oral-B electric toothbrushes use the same charging stand.

Hi, Electric toothbrush is fascinating. A German site, Alternate gives the movement of the oral B 2500 as 45,000 pulsation/min and 9,900 rotation/min. It is the only site have found this and makes my 7,000 pulsation is feeble. I just wonder if you should include this information as it would help. Just a thought. Otherwise you have an excellent site. Jiten

Hi Jitendra. Both the Oral-B Pro 2 2000 and 2 2500 offer 9,900 osciallations and 45,000 pulsations per minute. I am not sure precisely which model you have but I am guessing the Vitality models which have 7,800 osciallations and (normally) no pulsations. There is a difference in the cleaning effect, but it is marginal. If you brush is still working fine, I would not suggest you have to upgrade.

Jacky. They are identical. 😁 Both clean the teeth in exactly the same way and to the same standard. The only difference is the box contents/price. Any queries, let me know.

Hi, I recently acquired the 2500 -not sure whether the 2016 or the 2017 model-, however, I ended up returning it, as it didn't reduce speed upon applying too much pressure, or at least I couldn't notice; just the visual indicator turning on. Even pressing hard on my hand, I wouldn't observe any speed reduction; should that be obvious enough? or is it not so obvious? Great web page. Thank you in advance Eneko

Enko, It is not as obvious as you might think it would be. Given that the brush is moving at up to 40,000 times per minute, even a slow down of 10,000 movements is pretty hard to detect.
